The Somerset County Tax Assessment Records for the years 1793-1796 show Thomas Hitch in Rewastico Hundred assessed for 262½ acres of land, £200; one male/female slave under age 8, £3; one m/f slave age 8-14, £15; one male slave age 14-45, £45; 1½ oz. of plate, £0.12.6; other property, £46.7.6. Total assessment was £310, £310, £310, and £310 for years 1793, 1794, 1795, and 1796, respectively. (SoTA-1793/96)
In the Federal Assessment of 1798, Thomas Hitch is listed in Rewastico Hundred of Somerset County as owner and occupant of property "situated near Rockawalkin Branch" consisting of one framed wood dwelling house, one story, size 30' x 16'; one sawed log cook house, one story, size 30' x 16'; one round log meat house, one story, size 9' x 9'; one framed wood milk house, one story, size 8' x 8', All this contained 80 perches assessed at $200. Also was assessed $75 for dwelling house & $80 for 262 acres of land. Finally, Thomas Hitch was listed as the owner of three slaves, two over the age of 12. (TA1798). In the 1798/1803 Commissioners of the Tax Received Report, Thomas Hitch is listed in Rewastico Hundred of Somerset County and assessed taxes for 262½ acres of land, etc. (SoTA-1798/1803)
In the Federal Census of 1800, Thomas Hitch is listed in Somerset County on page 62 with two males under 10, one male 26-45, two females under 10, one female 26-45 and three slaves.
On Feb 20 1801, Thomas Hitch is mentioned, along with William and Levin Hitch, in a Levin Handy and William Elgate Hitch bond with Hugh Gemmil. (SoLR-N:116,121). He is mentioned as a claimant of Joshua Hitch Sr., deceased.
On May 5 1810, Thomas Hitch sold to Thomas Rencher for $1,200, four slaves (woman Minta, boy Sam, boy Adam, and boy Isaac), livestock, corn and bacon and, for another $1,200, 150 acres of land in "High Suffolk" where the said Hitch now lives. No metes and bounds. (SoLR-T:428,429). On May 5 1810, He sold 35 acres of "High Suffolk" to William Stone Sr. for $200. Land beginning at a marked chestnut post at the point of a divisional line between Thomas Rencher dec'd and the said William Stone thence N42W 157 perches by and with the said William Stone's line of marked tress unto the lands of Harry Dulany, thence S9W 53 perches by and with Dulany's land to the land of Mrs. Polly Hitch, thence S44E 127 perches, thence N43E 36½ perches to the said marked chestnut post containing 35 acres. (SoLR-T:533).
In the Federal Census of 1810, Thomas Hitch is listed in Somerset County on page 277, Rewastico district in a household comprised of three males under age 10, one male age 45+, one female under age 10, one female age 16-26, one female age 26-45, five "others" and four slaves. He is listed two houses from Polly Hitch in the census records.
On Feb 9 1813, Mary Hitch, widow of Thomas Hitch, gave deed for 21¼ acres of land to George Moseley for $85. The land was described as beginning at a marked chestnut, the corner tree of afsd George Moseley's land which he purchased of William S. Handy thence S28W 58½ perches by and with said Moseley's line to the land occupied by Mary Hitch, widow of William E. Hitch, thence N43W 67½ perches by and with said Mary Hitch's land to land purchased by William Stone Sr. of Thomas Hitch, deceased, thence N43E 57 perches by and with said Stone's land to land belonging to William Rencher and thence with a straight line to the beginning laid out for 21¼ acres. (SoLR-JP1:399).
In the 1813/1814 Commissioner of the Tax Report for Somerset County, the "heirs" of Thomas Hitch "of J." in the 1st Election District and taxed for 262½ acres of land valued at $700.
For the 1800 and 1810 Federal Censuses, he is listed as age 26-45 and age 45+, respectively, in Somerset County, MD.
Thomas Hitch died sometime after the Census of 1810 but before Feb 9 1813 when his wife Mary was indicated as "widow of Thomas Hitch" in a land record. (SoLR-JP1:399)
Thomas married Mary (Molly) Rencher, daughter of Thomas Rencher and Baty Hitch, about 1771 in Somerset Co., MD. (Mary (Molly) Rencher was born about 1754 in Somerset Co., MD and died on 06 Oct 1843 in Somerset Co., MD.)
