Molly Hitch was indicated as a daughter, along with Sally Rencher and Alice Harris, of Thomas Rencher Sr. in his will written Aug 18 1806, Codicil; Sep 29 1806; and probated Oct 15 1806. Also named were sons John, Thomas, Samuel, and William Rencher and grandchildren Betsy Hitch, Betsy Harris (daughter of William and Alice Harris), John Hitch, Thomas Hitch, Littleton Hitch, and Sarah Hitch (SoW-EB23:106/108).
On Feb 12 1812, the Executor for Thomas Rencher to show cause why negroes Minty, Adam and Samuel, claimed by Mary Hitch, should not be stricken from inventory. John Knipschelk was summoned to testify for Mary Hitch. (SoOCP-1811/23:14). On Sep 25 1813, Mary Hitch, with Samuel, John, Thomas and William Rencher, William Harris and John Callaway, sold deed for 100 acres of marshland called "Earnedly" located on the north side of Monie Bay to Moses Horner for $5. (SoLR-JP1:348). On Oct 26 1813, Thomas Rencher and wife Priscilla sold 150 acres of "High Suffolk" to Mary Hitch. No metes and bounds given in this record (SoLR-JP1:292).
In the Commissioners of the Tax Ledger for Election District 1 in Somerset County in 1817, Mary Hitch is assessed as follows: ·"High Suffolk"; 262˝ acres: $785 ·Slaves Sam (age 13), Isaac (age 8), Levin (age 4), Adam (age 9): $145 ·other property, etc.: $95, $34, $61
In the Federal Census of 1820 for District 1 in Somerset County, Mary Hitch is listed on page 103 as one male age 10-16, one male age 16-18, two males age 16-26, one female age 16-26, one female age 45+ and 6 slaves. She is but three houses from Polly Hitch (widow of William E.).
In the Commissioners of the Tax Ledger for Election District 1 in Somerset County in 1823, Mary Hitch "of Thomas" is assessed as follows: ·"High Suffolk"; 150 acres: $335 ·Slaves Sam (age 21), Isaac (age 14): $160 ·Slaves Levin (age 12), Adam (age 3), Minty (age 40): $115 ·Slaves Ann (age 6), Minty (age 20), unknown (age 4 months): $115 ·5 beds etc., 2 horses, 2 oz. of plate: $77 ·8 cattle, 14 hogs, 13, sheep: $57 ·other property: $11 (SoTA-1823:195)
In the Somerset County Tax Assessment Ledger for 1830, Quantico District, Mary Hitch is assessed for the following: ·"High Suffolk", 150 acres: $750 ·Slaves Sam (age 25), Isaac (age 20): $600 ·Levin (age 19), Minta (age 47): $350 ·Anne (age 13), 4 cattle, 9 hogs: $185 ·1 carriage, 2 beds, other: $40 (SoTA-1830:64)
In the Federal Census of 1840, Mary Hitch is indicated in the Upper District of Somerset County (page 187) in a household comprised of one male age 10-15, one female age 10-15, one female age 30-40, one female age 50-60, one female age 70-80 and four slaves.
In the Somerset County Assessment Ledger for 1841-1852, Mary Hitch is indicated in Election District 9, Salisbury, and assessed as follows: Mary Hitch, 1841: ·To "High Suffolk", 150 acres: $900 ·To Minta (60), Ann (24), Isaac (31): $550 ·To Levin (30), Leah (2), Sarah (4): $360 ·To 1 horse, 2 cows, 3 cattle, 5 sheep, 8 hogs: $80 ·To 4 beds etc., other:$55 Total: $1945 1846 added: ·By "High Suffolk" 150 acres: $900 ·By Ann, Leah: $280 ·By Isaac to Thomas Hitch: $250 ·By Sarah to Thomas Hitch: $30 ·By other property lost or gone: $485 Total: $1945 (SoTA-1841/52:24)
The Vestry Minutes for Stepney Parish indicate that Mary (Polly) Hitch died of consumption on Oct 6 1843. She was 80 years old.
In her will written on Aug 10 1843 and probated In Somerset County on Nov 7 1843, Mary Hitch left the following: ·to daughter Sally, plantation "High Suffolk", 150a and negro woman Ann, negro girl Leah, negro woman Minta, my best feather bed, bedstead and furniture ·to daughter Elizabeth Hitch use of house and plantation during her natural life if she desires ·to son Thomas, give negro Isaac- To granddaughter Elizabeth T. Hitch, negro girl Sarah ·all the rest of estate to grandchildren Mary Alice, Elizabeth Temperance, and Littleton Joshua Hitch equally shared Friends George Todd and Dr. Richard Lemmin to be executors. Witnesses: Henry Toadvine, Ann Phillips, Maria G. Mills (SoW-JP5:88)
