Betsy Hitch was indicated as a granddaughter of Thomas Rencher Sr. in his will written Aug 18 1806, Codicil; Sep 29 1806; and probated Oct 15 1806.
In an 1830 Tax Assessment, Elizabeth Hitch was listed in the Quantico District Tax ledger as being assessed for slaves Henry (age 10), Thomas (age 7) and Mary (age 7) for a total of $225. (SoTA-1830:64). In an 1841 Tax Assessment, "Miss" Elizabeth Hitch was listed in the Election District 9 Tax ledger, for Salisbury, as being assessed for negroes Henry (age 20), Tamer (age 18), and Mary (age 16) for a total of $650. (SoTA-1841/1852:25)
In the 1850 Federal Census for Somerset County, Maryland, Elizabeth Hitch is indicated in a household on page 504, Salisbury District, with her brother-in-law William Byrd and family as follows: - Elizabeth Hitch, age 60 - William R. Byrd, farmer, age 44 - Sally Byrd, age 46 (Elizabeth's sister) - Sarah E. Byrd, age 18 - George W. Byrd, age 17 - Elizabeth Byrd, age 14 - George F. Byrd, age 3/12 All individuals were born in Maryland.
Elizabeth Hitch's will was written on Aug 30 1851 and probated Nov 18 1851 as follows: ·Niece, Elizabeth T. Hitch to get negro man Henry until he reaches age 50 when he is to go free. Also to get negro woman Mary and her children ·Sister, Sarah Byrd to get $150 ·Nephew, Littleton Joshua Hitch to get $100 ·George W. Byrd to get a bed ·Cousin, Ellen McDaniel to get $100 ·Brother, Thomas Hitch to get balance of estate. Executor was William R. Byrd and witness was George W. Covington. (SoW-JP5:193)
