Roughly, during this generation of the our original immigrant John Smock's line, is when the surname SMOCK evolved to SMACK.

On Feb 8 1803, Purnell Porter was assigned as guardian to Thomas Smack (of Levi). Sureties provided by James Bowen and William Hammond Jr. (WoOC:66). In 1805, Sally Smack of Levi was provided guardian Thomas N. Cropper by the Orphan's Court (WoOC:125).

In the 1810 Census for Worcester Co., MD, Purnell Porter is listed with a household as 00211-10001. This is the gentleman that was assigned as Thomas Smack's "guardian" and does not mean Thomas would necessarily live with him, as guardianship is just a legal set-up for an adult male to (generally) to look after an orphan's estate. It should be noted that there are several Cropper households in the area (Thomas Smack's mother's maiden name), namely Henry Cropper (11010-20010) and Edmund Cropper (01101-14001) nearby and a little further away, Stephen Cropper (21010-11001).

Thomas N. Cropper was assigned to be guardian for Thomas Smack's sister, Sally Smack, in 1805. He is listed in Worcester Co. in 1810 in a household as 30010-00200. This one has 3 males under age 10 and two females age 16-26 beside Thomas N. Cropper who was age 26-45 (born 1765-1784). Two households away from him is Levin Cropper as 10301-02010 - was this Levin Cropper the father of Thomas N. Cropper? More research is required and we may never know for sure.

Thomas Smack was listed as head of the following households during the subsequent census years:
1820 Census: 100100-00100 in Worcester Co., MD (District 2). Age 18-26, suggesting he was born 1794-1802
1830 Census: 1010100000000-0100010000000 in Worcester Co., MD (District 3). Age 20-30, suggesting he was born 1800-1810.

This would narrow his birth year to 1800-1802 and he would have been age 1-3 when assigned Purnell Porter as his guardian in 1803. It would also prove that Andasiah (Cropper) Smack was his mother who married Levi Smock in early 1799 (and not some potential earlier wife of Levi, if there were any). Thomas Smack must have died sometime after his last child, Egbert Smack, is born in 1832 and before the taking of the 1840 census where he is not listed as a head of household. His wife, Elizabeth (Adkins) Smack remarried in late 1840 to Levin Gray.
