Egbert Smack is connected to father Thomas through marriages of his mother Elizabeth Adkins to Thomas Smack in 1819, then as Elizabeth Smack who married Levin Gray in 1840. The remarried Elizabeth Gray is matriarch of the family in the household for the 1850 census with son Egbert and the rest of the family.
On Jan 21 1843, Mary Bowen sold land for $150 to Levin Gray (Egbert's stepfather) and Egbert U. Smack. To Levin Gray during his life and no longer then, after Levin Gray's death, to Egbert U. Smack and his heirs forever. Land bounded on the north by the road leading from Poplar Town to the Trap and on the southwest by the road leading from the old Academy lot now belonging to Samuel Massey to Little Neck Landing containing about 3 acres of land. Being the same more or less called "Bowens Discovery." (WoLR-GMH6:264)
In 1850, Egbert Smack, age 18, and Hannah E. Hudson, age 14, lived only two doors away from each other according to census records - they would marry in 1856.
On Jun 23 1859, Egbert U. Smack and Hannah his wife sold the 3a of land that he and Levin Gray had bought of Mary Bowen on Jan 21 1843, "Bowens Discovery." They received $125 from Mary J. Lane, wife of Francis Lane, to whom deed was granted. Egbert signed his name and Hananh used "her mark." (WoLR-WET1:508)
In the Civil War Registration List of July/August 1863 (Union) for Maryland Congressional District 1, Egbert Smack is listed as age 30 with the note, "Deserter, at large in the County."
Listed as age 38 in the 1870 Federal Census for Newark, Worcester Co., MD with household as Annie (age 33), Charles (12), John (10), Albert (8), Mary (6), Martha (4).
An account of Egbert Smack's estate was ordered on May 29 1879 and the value of his personal estate filed in Worcester Co., MD on Jun 18 1879 for $142.62 and $529.22 (WoSaleRec-1877/80:263,484-486, WoAcc-GTB5:253), so Egbert died sometime between 1876 when his last child was born and the date of his estate's accounting on May 29 1879 (probably early 1879). This document was signed by Hannah E. Smack using her mark.

Arrangements for the sale of his personal property to pay debts is reflected in the Worcester County Orphan's Court proceeding beginning May 1879.
Egbert married Hannah Elizabeth Hudson, daughter of John Hudson and Sophia (Sophy, Duffy) Watts, on 09 Sep 1856 in Worcester Co., MD. (Hannah Elizabeth Hudson was born on 26 May 1837 in Worcester Co., MD 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 and died on 23 May 1924 in Worcester Co., MD.)
