Nathaniel (of Worcester) Smullen
- Born: Abt 1741, Somerset Co., MD
- Marriage (1): Sarah Fooks? about 1760
- Died: 1783-1786, Worcester Co., MD about age 42
Nathaniel Smullen's clearing is mentioned in a Dec 6 1774 survey of "Tulls Purchase" for 33 acres for Patrick Causey that began back in Wicomico Forest at a red oak on E-most side of a large branch, abt 0.25 mi N-ward of a small clearing of Nathaniel Smullen's. The tract corresponds to the exact area where Eli Smullen was known to have lived (hence the circumstantial evidence of father-son relationship). In fact, "Tulls Puchase" is adjacent to, or part of the land where the Smullen Cemetery is located on St. Lukes Road in Worcester Co. and where Eli Smullen and descendants are buried.
The only other item listed for Nathaniel Smullen this compiler has found is in the 1783 Tax List where he is located in Wicomico Hundred of Worcester Co. and assessed for 72a of land in "Duncastle" and two black cattle. His household consists of four males and four females. Duncastle is located where the Smullen cemetery lies today and where Eli Smullen is buried, furthering the case of the lineage of Eli Smullen's descendants being of Nathaniel Smullen of Worcester.
Nathaniel probably died by 1786 when, on Dec 15 1786, Sarah & William Smullen purchased from Jesse Fooks, 72a, part of "Duncastle" for 15 pounds. It is described as begininning at a marked red oak at the run of a branch that is divison between Jesse Fooks and Samuel Davis heirs and three perches from the fourth angles of afsd tract the, S32E4; S24E14; S60E16; S35E12; S21E34; S20E14; S92; S86W59; N6.75E147; right line to beginning (WoLR-M:22). Compiler's Note: when this land is platted, it is shown to lie directly on the land that the Smullen cemetery lies in 2025.
Nathaniel married Sarah Fooks? about 1760. (Sarah Fooks? was born about 1745 in Worcester Co., MD and died after 1800 in Worcester Co., MD.)
