This Eli is practically guaranteed to be a son of Nathaniel Smullen - the question is, which Nathaniel Smullen? There is Nathaniel, s/o Randall Sr., born 1719 and there is, Nathaniel who was born c1741, s/o Randall Jr. The latter Nathaniel is the most likely candidate for father of Eli as we know that Randall Jr. very definitely drifted deep into Worcester Co., MD early while the rest of his family stuck close to their root lands in Somerset Co. around the land tracts "Unity Enlarged" and "Goshen."

Eli Smullen probably turned age 21 somewhere about the time he purchased his first land in 1789.

On Sep 2 1789 William Smullen, son of Nathaniel Smullen, sold to Eli Smullen 72 acres of "Duncastle" for £54 (WoLR-N:159). This William Smullen was a known son of the younger Nathaniel Smullen and it is likely that he was selling this land to his brother although that is not mentioned in the record itself. There is no doubt, the tract that Sarah and William Smullen purchased from Jesse Fooks in 1786, is the land that the Smullen Cemetery sits today that contains the earthly remains of Eli Smullen and his descendants (2020). The evidence that this Eli is son of the younger Nathaniel becomes very compelling and highly probable.

For the Jun 9 1809 Chancery Court we find: Joshua Duer vs. Spencer Owens, Jonathan Owens, Patty Owens, James Owens, Hulda Owens, Eben Owens, Eli Smullen and Sarah Smullen. WO. Estate of Peter Owens - Owens Chance, Owens Lot. Recorded (WoCR-81:890; Acc No 17,898-1548; MSA S512-1620). NEED TO VIEW THIS RECORD
