Had very blue eyes (conversation with Florence Elliott Wiltbank Smith). On Apr 20 1891, Mahala A. Shiles filed to collect pension for Jesse Shiles' service in the Civil War. When her son, John H. Shiles died, his obit in 1896 states she is living at 706 Brown Street in Wilmington. She was also living there in 1893 when her daughter Mary died.

Obituary can be seen in the Wilmington Morning News, 12/21/1935, page 2, column 1.

This compiler's maternal grandmother (born 1918) told me a few stories of her to include in the anecdotal records of my family. Two things she remembered are that she was very small statured and had VERY piercing blue eyes. Another thing she remembered and, at the risk of her rolling over in her grave, is that she was supposedly noted for going into a room of family, passing the most god-awful smelling wind, and leaving the room with a smirk on her face (LOLOL). I am sure I would have gotten along with my great-great-great grandmother very well!

Jesse and Annie had eight children in total and only 5 made it past young adulthood and one was my 2x great grandfather Harry Thomas Shiles (1869-1953), their first child and son. Annie collected pension for Jesse's Civil War service for 50 years from 1885-1935.
