On April 3, 1838, the Somerset County Orphans Court Proceedings states, "Orphan: John T. and Joshua L. Hitch (of Littleton) - Appointed Guardian: Jane Hitch - Sureties: William S. Dashiell, Elisha Owens" (Somerset Co. Orphans Court Proceedings 1829-38, Folio 381)

Elizabeth Hitch's will was written on August 30, 1851 and probated November 18, 1851 as follows: - Niece, Elizabeth T. Hitch to get negro man Henry until he reaches age 50 when he is to go free. Also to get negro woman Mary and her children - Sister, Sarah Byrd to get $150 - Nephew, Littleton Joshua Hitch to get $100 - George W. Byrd to get a bed - Cousin, Ellen McDaniel to get $100 - Brother, Thomas Hitch to get balance of estate. Executor was William R. Byrd and witness was George W. Covington. (Somerset Co. Wills 1837-1859, Folio 193)

In her will probated on April 2, 1852, Sarah Graham bequeathed to Joshua Hitch 100 acres of land of Sarah Graham's Quantico farm. The record also, it mentions Sarah Graham's daughters Jane Hitch, Leah A. Hopkins and Sarah A. Hopkins. (Abstracts of Somerset Co. Wills)

On April 24, 1869, Joshua L. and Martha E. Hitch sold land to Alexander W. Goslee for $800. Land was described as that land willed to Joshua by Sarah Graham out of a tract called "East Conclusion" and "Bennetts Venture." Adjoins land of Levin C. Bailey and that of Leatherbury's deed. Witnesses: S.S. Quinn and Mary E. Cathell. (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber TFJR No. 1, Folio 385).

In the Federal Census of 1870, Joshua Hitch is indicated in the 1st District, Worcester County, Maryland (household 80, page 668) in a household as follows: - Joshua Hitch, age 33, carpenter, $100 in Personal property - Martha Hitch, age 25, keeps house - Isaac Hitch, age 2 - Mary Hitch, age 2 months - Mary Cathell, age 62, lady All were born in Maryland.

In the Federal Census of 1880, Joshua L. Hitch is indicated in District 1, Worcester County, Maryland in a household as follows: - Joshua L. Hitch, age 43, born in MD - Martha E. Hitch, age 35, born in MD - Isaac C. Hitch, age 13, born in MD - Mary J. Hitch, age 10, born in MD - Louella Hitch, age 6, born in MD - Mary E. Cathell, age 74, born in MD - Mary A. Hitch, age 26, born in MD.

In the "List of Taxable Males - Worcester County - 1882," Joshua L. Hitch is included in District Number 1, Pocomoke City.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Joshua L. Hitch is indicated in District 1, Pocomoke, Worcester County, Maryland (ED98, sheet 7, line 37) as follows: - Joshua L. Hitch, born 11/1836 in MD - Louella Hitch, born 11/1874 in MD.

In the Federal Census of 1920, Joshua L. Hitch is indicated in Worcester County, Maryland as follows: - Joshua L. Hitch, age 83, born in MD - Virginia L. Hitch, age 68, born in VA.

In his Maryland Death Certificate, it states that Joshua L. Hitch was born on November 19, 1836 and died of a stroke, age 83 on December 9, 1922 in Worcester County, Pocomoke City, Maryland. His occupation was a Ship Carpenter. His father was Littleton Hitch and his mother was Mary E. (Graham) Hitch. Informer of the death was Virginia Hitch of Pocomoke City. He was buried in Pocomoke M.E. Cemetery.
