There were apparently two (2) Robert J. Hitches in Maryland in 1860, born about the same year. Robert John Hitch was son of Robert(?) Tubman and Mary (Malone) Hitch and Robert(?) Joseph Hitch was son of Benjamin Pitts and Molly (Lankford) Hitch. One must take care as the two can easily be confused when examining records of the time period. Robert(?) Joseph Hitch was in Baltimore by 1860 where Robert John Hitch remained in and around Allen, Maryland until his death in 1901.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Robert J. Hitch is indicated in household 1741 in the Trappe District, Somerset County, Maryland with the Malone family as follows: - Simon Malone, age 40 - Levi Malone, age 39 - Letiticia Malone, age 31 - Simon F. Malone, age 8 - Mary V. Malone, age 6 - Alexander Malone, age 4 - Emily Brereton, age 10 - Robert J. Hitch, age 26, farmhand All were born in Maryland.

On Sep 30 1862, Robert J. Hitch is listed in the U.S. Adjutant General Enrollment for Somerset County Election District No. 7 as age 28, a farmer, Trappe P.O.

On January 21, 1868, Robert J. and Amanda Hitch sold land to Simeon & Levi Malone for $600. The land was described as the farm they now reside which was devised to the said Simeon and Levi Malone and Mary Hitch, mother of the said Robert J. Hitch, by the last will of George Malone. Land is at Upper Trappe. Witness: Levin Price.(WiLR-TFJR1:141).

In the Federal Census of 1870, Robert J. Hitch is indicated in household 35 in the Trappe District, Wicomico County, Maryland as follows: - Robert J. Hitch, age 36, farmer - Sarah Hitch, age 30, keeps house - Kirby A. Hitch, age 4 - Mary L. Hitch, age 1 All were born in Maryland.

In her will written May 31, 1872 and probated July 30 ,1872, Dorothy W. Hastings (his aunt) left Robert J. Hitch five acres of land in Upper Trappe known as "Hitch Lot". Robert J. Hitch was instructed to pay $30 for it to William J. Bounds. Witnesses were Levin B. Price, Elisha Simms, and William J. Twilley (WiW-WB1)

In the Federal Census of 1880, Robert J. Hitch is indicated in a household in District 7 (Trappe), Wicomico County, Maryland as follows: - Robert J. Hitch, age 46, born in MD - Sarah A. Hitch, age 43, born in MD - Kirby A.W. Hitch, age 14, born in MD - Mary L. Hitch, age 11, born in MD - Robert T.P. Hitch, age 6, born in MD - Beverly T. Hitch, age 3, born in MD.

In the Federal Census of 1900, Robert J. Hitch is indicated in a household in District 7 (Trappe), Wicomico County, Maryland (ED118, sheet 2, line 6) as follows: - Robert J. Hitch, born 11/1833 in MD - Sarah A. Hitch, born 10/1836 in MD - Beverly T. Hitch, born 9/1876 in MD.
