B.F. Hitch was elected Stuart of Masonic Palmetto Lodge #19 A.F.M. for the ensuing year on January 7, 1853 and installed on January 6, 1854. (Some SC Marriages, Obituaries & Misc. Information 1826-54, The Laurensville Herald).

Benjamin F. Hitch enlisted as Private in the 35th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia where he enlisted in Atlanta on Sep 17 1861 and was appointed Quartermaster Sargeant later that year. He died at Petersburg, Virginia on November 7, 1864. (Roster of Confederate Soldiers of Georgia - DAR). On the muster records for Sep 1862 through Oct 1864, he is listed as "present"; however, the muster records of Nov/Dec 1864 state he died on Nov 7 1864 (do not know why there is a discrepancy with his gravestone record). He was never married. His gravestone in the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC indicates his death date as Jan 8 1864.
