Nancy Hunter ¹

In the "Laurensville Herald" for August 24, 1846, it states, "Died on the 6th, 8 miles northeast of Laurens, Mrs. Nancy Hitch, wife of W.W. Hitch, Esq. in the 45th year of her age. Member of the Presbyterian Church, leaves husband, three daughters and three sons. She was Presbyterian Church member for 23 years.

Nancy married William Winder Hitch, son of John Hitch and Katherine Hanna, on 13 Feb 1823.^{1 2} (William Winder Hitch was born on 22 Mar 1802 in Laurens Co., SC,^{2 4 7 8 9 10} died on 09 Jun 1870 in Panola Co., MS ^{2 8} and was buried about 12 Jun 1870 in Chapeltown Cemetery, Batesville, Panola Co., MS ⁸.)

"Nancy Hunter died about 3:30 A.M. Again records do not agree. One states she is the daughter of Matthew Hunter and Esther Hutchinson. Another from the old Bible that she is the daughter of Matthew Hunter who died Feb. 1, 1822 and Nancy Hunter who died Oct. 9, 1807.

William Winder Hitch removed from Laurens Co., Nov. 1860. He went to Mississippi. He was able to educate the children by his first wife but the Civil War and his death shortly afterward prevented his educating the last three children. He was probably named for some reason not known to the compiler for William Winder (1714-1792) who resided in Maryland and married September 22, 1743 - Esther Gillis (1726-1767)."
