From "A Hitch Orchard" by Daisy Hitch Davies, 1931: "Hardy Hitch Jr. was probably a sailmaker like his father. During the Civil War he made army tents in Brooklyn. He, with his brother Ebenezer, joined the large number of men who went to California during the gold rush in 1849. A vessel had been fitted up in Fairhaven, MA. and sailed from there. Hardy came back in a few years but Ebenezer never returned."
