His tombstone indicates he was lost at sea.
From "A Hitch Orchard", 1931: Charles Henry Hitch worked at sail making with his father. He made army tents in Philadelphia during the Civil War. After this work, he took a short sea voyage and was washed overboard in a terrific storm and drowned. He was engaged to a beautiful young lady.
