His tombstone indicates he was in the U.S. Navy (he served on the USS South Carolina). He was serving in January 1865 for the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron on hte Ship "South Carolina" as an acting Ensign.

From "A Hitch Orchard", 1931: Ansel Stuart Hitch learned the boat building trade. He made two sea voyages and became an expert navigator. He served in the Civil War for four years. Was acting Ensign in the Navy. He was then ordered to China for two years longer. He afterward settled in business in New Bedford. His widow was pensioned and still living in 1930 in New Bedford, MA.

In the Federal Census of 1880, A.S. Hitch is listed in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts in a household as follows: - A.S. Hitch (male), age 44, born in MA - Mary Hitch, age 30, born in MA - Harry S. Hitch (female?), age 9, born in MA.
