*It appears the Whayland Family came from Dorchester County to Somerset County, MD in the late 18th century. Thomas Whayland was in Somerset by at least 1776.
**Was this Thomas Whayland the brother to the famous Joseph Whelan, the Revolutionary War privateer? Evidence is mounting that this is indeed him and family legend has said that he was a patriarch of the line. More research is forthcoming. This compiler currently believes that this Thomas Whayland is a possible brother to the piccaroon.
