From "A Hitch Orchard" by Daisy Hitch Davies, 1931, it indicates, "In the History of Gibson County, Indiana, we find record of "Sovern" Hitch's descendants in which it states he had been of Bridgeville, Delaware, where he was the owner and had been the proprietor of the "BULLS EYE", a famous tavern which he conducted until his death." (It also incorrectly states he came from England, however.)
In the 1807 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, "Suverin" Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: capitulation 1 horse This is his first occurance in the tax records with the previous records in 1803. This suggests a birth year of 1783-1786.
In the 1809 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, "Severeign" Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 1 horse
No listing found in Sussex County tax records after 1809.
Sovereign Hitch is listed under the 9th DE Infantry under Capt. Walter in a Nov 28 1814 return (War of 1812).
In the Federal Census of 1820, "Sovern" Hitch is indicated in Caroline County, Maryland (page 114) in a household comprised of two males under age 10, one male age 26-45, one female under age 10 and one female age 16-26.
In the Federal Census of 1830, "Sovern" Hitch is indicated in Little Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware (page 129) in a household comprised of one male under age 5, two males age 5-10, one male age 10-15, two males age 15-20, one male age 40-50, two females under age 5, one female age 10-15, one female age 20-30 and one female age 30-40.
In the Federal Census of 1840, "Sovern" Hitch is indicated in Caroline County, Maryland (page 341) in a household comprised of one male age 10-15, one male age 50-60, one female age 5-10 and one female age 30-40.
Sovereign married Malla Hatfield about 1810. (Malla Hatfield was born about 1790 in DE and died after 1830.)
