Zachariah Hitch is listed as a patron for the 1881 Map of Gibson County, Indiana (copy in the DAR Library) where he is noted as a farmer in Patoka, his settlement in the region as 1842 and his nativity as Caroline County, Maryland.

Excerpt from letter by Mrs. Adda Oliphant George, Petersburg, IN. dated Nov. 5,1930 from the Daisy Hitch Davies papers, "Zachariah Hitch was a quiet man, kind always. He enjoyed mirth, however, in his quiet way. He was a Whig - later a strong Republican. His large family prevented his taking part in the Civil War - but the family aided the Union every way possible. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, but since his wife was a devout member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Denomination, he usually went with her."
