James R. Hitch, 53, died Thursday, Oct 26, 1995, at Pleasant Valley Extended Care Facility in Camarillo after an extended illness. He served in the U. S. Navy for 20 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was active in the American Legion, a member of the Fleet Reserve, Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the First Baptist Church of Camarillo. He was born Sept 29, 1942, in Alton, the son of Goldie Hitch of Edwardsville and the late Charles Hitch. He married the former Shelby Sitzes, July 25, 1962 in Bethalto. She survives. Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Sharon Hitch and Allen and Anita Hitch, all of Richland, Wash; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Don and Theresa Williams of Camarillo and David and Yvette Williams of Bethalto, a stepdaughter, Lisa Kendall of Ventura, Calif; 12 grandchildren, including Rachel and Evan Williams of Bethalto, five sisters and three brothers-in-laws; Nira and James Ray of Jerseyville, Pauline Stone Wells, Billie Masiero and Sharon and Neil McGuire, all of Alton, and Lois and Dale McRae of Edwardsville; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald E. and Barbara Hitch of Edwardsville. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Nov.8 at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel in Bethalto. His nephew, the Rev. C. Richard Stone, will officiate. Memorials may be sent to the American Legion Scholarship Fund at 3410 South A Street in Oxnard, CA 93030. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.
