Charles W Hitch, 82, Dies In Bethalto; Native of Patterson

Charles William Hitch of Bethalto, 82, died at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Dec 24, 1977, at Wood River Township Hospital, Wood River, following an illness of three years.

He was born Oct 7, 1895, in Patterson, the son of the late William J. and Daisy March Hitch. He was married to Goldie Lovelace on Oct 17, 1928. He was a veteran of World War I and served in France and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He retired as a leatherworker from International Shoe Co., in 1960.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: five daughters, Mrs. Pauline Stone and Mrs. Sharon McGuire, both of Alton; Mrs. Lois McRae of Bethalto; Mrs. Nira Ray of Jerseyville and Mrs. Billie Masiero of Wood River; two sons, James of Camarillo, Calif, and Ronald of Moro; 29 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Scoles of Pocahontas.

Visitation was from 4 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at Smith Funeral Home, Bethalto, where services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28, with Dr. C. O. Kool, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bethalto officiating. Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens, Bethalto, with full military rites by the Bethalto VFW of which he was a member.

Pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased, Stephen McRae, Dannie McRae, Kevin McRae, Thomas McRae, Gregory Masiero and James Ray. Relatives from this area attending visitation and services were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith, Mrs. Esther Patterson, Mrs. Vera Lee Preston and Mrs. Delores Wear.
