Augustus S. Hutchinson's Civil War service is kept at the National Archives. It states that he enlisted as a Private with Company C of the 19th AR Regiment on Oct 19 1861 in Pike Co. The records show he was captured on Jan 11 1863 and became a POW where he was sent to Camp Chase on Jan 30 1863, then to St. Louis. He is described as 5'-10" tall, 25 years old, blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion. He was then sent to Ft. Delaware on Apr 10 1863 and on to City Point for exchange Apr 29 1863.
He rejoined the service on May 5 1863 at Camp 8 & 19 in AR and was appointed Lt Col on May 8 1863 by Gen Johnston to take the rank on Aug 13 1863. The muster records then chronicle his service as follows:

- Oct to Dec 1863: Absent on leave starting Dec 18 1863
- Jan/Feb 1864: Absent, sick leave beginning Feb 5 1864
- Mar/Apr 1864: Present
- Jul/Aug 1864: Absent, wounded on Jul 22 1864, on sick furlough
- Jul 27 1864, Ocmulee Hospital, Macon, GA, indicates "G.S.W", left arm, ball entered 3" or 4" above the joint and passed out the arm near the joint.
