The following is an E-Mail to me from June 9, 2000 from Peggy Green, a descendant of Peter Hitch and his first wife Charlott Colbaugh (Goldbach):

Thanks, Mike for the info. There's been some confusion as to the name of my Peter Hütsch's wife. It's taken me a while, myself, but I finally realized that he was married twice. I'm a product of his first marriage.

Pieter Hütsch came to Baltimore from Bremen, Germany aboard the ship Louise 3 Jun 1841. He traveled with his first wife Charlott Goldbach (later known as Colbaugh). She was 27 at the time, putting her year of birth abt 1815 in Hessen, Germany. They had a daughter Agnes (my gggrandmother), who was 1 yr. old when they landed at Baltimore. They stated they were from Fulda. His naturalization papers, filed in Cambria County, PA, state that he was born in Marktown(?) (Margretenhaun, just east of Fulda).

I believe that Charlott died soon after they arrived in America. He bought a farm in Carroll Township, Cambria County (I believe Adam Goldbach lived on part). With a farm to work and a year-old child to raise, he needed a wife. He married Catherine/Charity Schart (also spelled Schade, Schaet). The only time I have seen records where Catherine/Charity had the name Colbaugh attached to her was on Agnes' death record. At that time, her son (my ggrandfather) stated that her mother was Catherine Colbaugh. Catherine was the only mother Agnes ever knew, but her birth mother was Charlott Goldbach (Colbaugh). Peter's other children were through his 2nd wife Catherine. That would be Catherine born 5 Jan 1844, Augustine born 22 Oct 1846, Mary Ann Barbara born 8 Jul 1848, and John Adam 6 Sep 1850.

Peter was born abt 1808 and died Mar 1863. Charlott was born abt 1815 and died abt 1841-42. Catherine was born abt 1812 and died 6 Jun 1861. The surviving children were Agnes, who married John Teufel/Devil (later legally changed to Harvey). She died 12 Sep 1917. Mary "Anna Barbara," who married John W. Long. She died 21 Dec 1945. And John Adam who married Ann Agnes Mary McCance 14 Feb 1929 and then married Catherine Matilda Wirtner Jan 1892. He died 13 Feb 1929.

I'll try to clear this up with John Francis Hitch. I was born and raised in Detroit, MI, and never thought we had relatives living anywhere near us. Turns out we did and never knew it.

Thanks again! Peggy
