In the 1880 Federal Census for Worcester County, Maryland, Margaret Hitch is listed in the Atkinsons District in household 246 with the following: - Margaret Hitch, age 56, widow, keeps house - Mary Hitch, age 22, at home - Levin Hitch, age 23, laborer - Delina Hitch, age 10, at home

On Mar 7 1871, Henry W. Hitch was forced to put a $48.26 mortgage on his land "Heaths Venture" (50a) and part of "Buck Harbor" (20a) because of a Jan 6 1871 judgment against him of that amount by William D. Brown and Hiram Phillips. The land is described as adjoining that of James H. McGrath, Thomas Brown and John & Joshua Owens, said land being bequeathed to Henry W. Hitch and Handy Hitch by their father by last will and testament (note: this LWT of father Samuel Hitch has not been found). Henry W. Hitch was to repay the obligation by Jan 6 1872. The mortgage was entered into record on May 2 1871. However, in the record, it states that the mortgage was assigned to Matilda M. Hitch on Feb 13 1872. (WoLR-ITM1:430) It is presumed that Henry Hitch had died between May 2 1871 and Feb 13 1872 (likely closer to the latter). She presumably paid the mortgage because she held the land till 1883 as below.

We know that Matilda Hitch was still living on April 14, 1883, when, for $100, Samuel and wife Hetty A. Hitch, William H. and wife Henny Washbord, and Mary M. Hitch sold to Levin T. Hitch 75 acres of land in the 7th Election District called "Heath's Venture" and "Buck Harbor". This was indicated as the lands that Washington Hitch "owned at his death and on which Matilda M. Hitch now lives." (WoLR-ITM9:574). NOTE - This was also the land that was devised to Henrietta (Brown) Hitch by her grandfather.

Matilda M. Hitch had died by October 1884 when, in the Worcester County Orphans Court records there is a listing, "Matilda M. Hitch (deceased) by William Fooks - will exhibited." (WoOCP) This compiler has not found such a will to date. Note - this William Fooks is the father of Warren Durand Fooks who married Mary Estelle (Molly) Hitch.
