E-mail coorespondence with Ann Smith in 2009:

Hi Mike

Wanted to double check my materials, before getting back to you. I'm not clear on James Hitch's parentage, but the rest seems to be pretty solid. My primary source is some pages copied from a family book kept by John Eugene Ammel(1843 - 1929) who married Julia Jane Hitch 31 July 1870. So far, I've been able to substantiate most of what's in it.

According to the book, Julia Jane was the daughter of James Hitch & Eleanor Jane Waller. Eleanor J. was the daughter of Nelson Waller & Julia A Murphy. James married Eleanor Oct 5, 1846 in DE & they had 3 children: Mary: b: 19 Feb 1849, died 10 Nov 1850; Julia Jane b: 12 Aug 1851 d: 26 Dec 1936 & Isaac b: 14 Nov 1853, died: July 17 1876 in Lawrenceburg IN. James is listed as dying in Lawrenceburg 16 Jan 1874. The book also lists 22 Aug 1872 as the date John E & Julia Jane & their eldest child moved to Lawrenceburg IN. It does not say when James & Isaac Hitch made the move or mention any sister of James Hitch. The Ammels moved back to the East coast & MD somewhere between 1876 & 1879.

In the 1850 census, James 27 is listed with "Jane" 27 & Mary 1. He is listed as a shoemaker & is directly below Nelson Waller 50, Julia Waller, 50 & Eleanor Jane's siblings: Julia AE Waller 16, & William T. Waller, 16. I could never figure out who the Mary 25, was as this was the only census that she was listed in.

James Hitch, Julia & Isaac are also listed with Julia Waller & William T. Waller in the 1860 census. Eleanor Jane died in 1858 of measles & the oldest daughter Mary had died in Nov 1850. I agree that James & Isaac stayed in DE through 1870. James, Julia & Isaac are listed together in Felton DE. Julia Jane married John Eugene Ammel 31 July 1870 in Felton DE.

On a recent trip to IN, I found 3 references to this family in the Lawrenceburg Press. These are all more chatty items than formal notices. The first is James Hitch's obit Jan 22, 1874. I agree that the "aged" was odd, the family book lists his age at death as 53 years, 3 months, 29 days. The obit does mention his occupation as shoemaker, which agrees with the census. it does not mention Mrs. Ammel, although it does say he was the brother of Mrs. Joseph White.

The second was an 1876 reference to an injury to Johnny Ammel working with wall paper. John Ammel was a painter in all records I've found.

The third was the obit for Isaac Hitch Thurs 20 July 1876 which said he was "Johnny" Ammel's brother-in-law and had died on Monday Morning. Again this fits with the notes in the family book.
Hope that this is some help to you. Let me know what you make of it. Do you still think that James & Mary Hitch are descended from Severn Hitch or from someone else?

The Lawrenceburgh (IN) Press for Thursday, Jan 22 1874 lists James Hitch's obituary. (Our records show his death as 16 January, 1874) It reads:
