Her death certificate indicates that she was born on January 19, 1845 in Maryland, the daughter of Thomas Driscoll and Molly Dykes, both of Maryland. The informant was her son John W. Hitch and she was buried at Nassawango Church. The spelling "Driscoll" did not come till later, it was Driskill or Driskell until the mid-to-late 19th century. Even the corruption "Dusky" exists.

She was called "Mama Hitch" by her grandchildren and one of them, Pearl Hitch Smith, states that she heard that she had "some Indian blood." Pearl Smith was also given the buttons from her wedding coat by Mollie Hitch Fooks and a fruit bowl by Hettie Ann herself in about 1915.

Hester married Samuel Henry Hitch, son of Washington Henry Hitch and Matilda Margaret Denston, on 23 Dec 1868 in Wicomico Co., MD.1 (Samuel Henry Hitch was born on 25 Dec 1848 in Worcester Co., MD,2 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 died on 20 Aug 1924 in Worcester Co., MD 10 and was buried on 22 Aug 1924 in Nassawango ("Old School Baptist") Church Cemetery, Snow Hill Rd., Worcester Co., MD 10.)
