- Died: Bef 06 Aug 1790, Sussex Co., DE
It appears that Oliver Griffin is the son of an adulterous relationship between Capt. Edward Hammond and Jane Griffen (w/o Enoch Griffin). See the notes under Hammond, but it appears there were three children born to that union; Ann, Amy and Oliver Griffin. Oliver was likely born in 1710 or 1711.
First time on Somerset Tax Lists is in 1728 suggesting older than 15 then.
Oliver Griffin had the tract FRIENDS ASSISTANCE surveyed for him on Sep 20 1745 for 32a. It was patented May 20 1751. On Oct 5 1751, he had it resurveyed as FRIENDS ASSISTANCE ENLARGED which added 220a of vacant land. These tracts are in the modern day in Worcester Co., MD near the far SE boundary between Worcester and Wicomico. On Dec 24 1771 121a of it he sold to John Duncan and then, on Jul 30 1773 he sold 25a to Thomas Purnell (son of Levi Purnell) and finally, on Feb 11 1773 he sold 120a to John Duncan (WoLR-I:001, 304, 362).
On Jun 23 1776, a Sussex Co. land warrant was issued to Aaron Gordy for GORDYS PURCHASE, who assigned it to Oliver Griffith (Griffin) who then sold it to William Coulter. But, by 1794, this is referred to as Griffin's land. This may be when (c1776) he moved northward in Sussex Co., DE. He had a plantation there by the 1790s, NW of Laurel almost to the Woodland Ferry in modern day.
