Nelly Hitch

In the 1793-1796 Assessment Record for Somerset County, "Miss Nelly" Hitch was listed in Rewastico Hundred and assessed for one male/female slave under age 8, £10; and one male/female slave age 8-14, £15. In 1795, she is not assessed anymore - this may indicate when she married Levin Handy. Total assessment was £25, £25, £0, £0 for the years 1793, 1794, 1795, 1796, respectively.

On Apr 10 1799, "Hitch's Hard Luck" was surveyed for John, William, Laban, Nancy and Peggy Hitch. Also for Edward Brown and wife Betsy, Joshua Pollitt and wife Sarah, William Elgate Hitch and wife Polly and Levin Handy and wife Nelly. The survey was for a new tract that included parts of tracts "High Suffolk", "Last Choice" and "Maddux's Luck" as well as tracts "Wilson's Discovery", "Hitch's Choice", and "Father's Neglect." The survey amounted to 1256 acres of land.

Nelly married Major Levin Handy in 1794-1795 in Somerset Co., MD. (Major Levin Handy was born on 30 Nov 1764 in Somerset Co., MD ¹ and died before 16 Aug 1804 in Worcester Co., MD ¹.)

Handy Family Annals, Handy, 1861. States Nelly Hitch, daughter of Joshua Hitch and aunt to Dr. William Hitch of Baltimore was second wife of Levin Handy.
