"The early education of Nathaniel Hitch was acquired in a primitive pay school. He lived at home until he reached his twentieth year and then travelled in many parts of the south and west. He taught school in Missouri for awhile and was engaged in different businesses. . . . In 1866, Nathaniel Hitch returned to Gibson County, Indiana for a brief period and then travelled through the west for sometime. Returning in 1879 he purchased land near Patoka and engaged in farming and stock raising. He dealt extensively in land in that vicinity and in the White River Township and still owns land in the latter township. In 1910, he removed to Princeton, Indiana and located at his present home at 903 North Main Street where he is now residing in honorable retirement. Mr. Hitch is a well read and well posted man and is highly respected in his community. Always taking an active interest in politics, he is allied with the Progressive Party. In matters of religious belief he has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years."
Served as a Drummer in Company F, 91st Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. Records at the National Archives indicate:
Nathaniel Hitch, Civil War, Enrolled August 22,1862; Mustered, with consent of parents, in Captain Williams' Co., 91st Regiment Indiana Infantry at Evansville, IN. October 1, 1862 as a musician. December 1862 Absent at Caseville, KY, by Col. John Foster. January and February 1863, Absent sick at Post Hospital at Hendersonville, KY. March 1863 , absent without leave since March 10.
Nathaniel Hitch, Drummer, Co. F, 91 Regt. Indiana Infantry appears on the "Descriptive List Of Deserters" dated March 31,1863, as age 19 years, height 5 ft 11 inches; complexion - dark; Eyes - black; Where born: Gibson County, IN; Occupation: farmer; When Enlisted - August 22, 1862; Where Enlisted - Warrick County, IN.; When mustered in: June 2, 1863; Where Mustered in: Evansville, IN.; For What Period mustered in: 3 years; When deserted: March 20, 1863; Where Deserted: Hendersonville, KY.
There is a second "LIST OF DESERTERS" dated March 10, 1865 and a "COMPANY DESCRIPTIVE BOOK" that lists Nathaniel Hitch as 6'-4" in height.
Finally there is a "CO. MUSTER-OUT ROLL" Salisbury, N.C. dated June 26, 1865 that says - Last paid to - Not paid since enlisted. Notes that he deserted from Hendersonville, KY. March 10, 1863.
