Hannah Elgate
- Born: Abt 1682, Somerset Co., MD
- Marriage (1): Adam Hitch about 1708
- Died: 1715-1716, Somerset Co., MD
The following are references from the book "Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore of Maryland" by Clayton Torrence:
(1) Headrights* in 1663: William ELGATE for himself, wife Hannah and sons John and William. (*a right for 50a of land)
(2) William ELGATE patented "Elgate" for 150a on June 3, 1664.
This shows the family ELGATE as William, Hannah and sons John and William. With two sons of unknown ages, we can safely assume that William and Hannah must have been at least 20-25 years old in 1663 (i.e., born before 1638-1643). However, we also know that William Jr. had daughter Hannah who married Adam Hitch and had their first child in October of 1687. If we assume that she was 20 years old at the time, this puts her birth at c.1667. Therefore, we can deduce that William Jr. was perhaps 20-25 in 1667 or born c. 1642-1647. This makes us revisit William and Hannah ELGATE (Sr.'s) birth years to 1642-1647 minus 20 to 25 years or possibly 1617 to 1627. If we take an "average of the years, we arrive at the following:
William ELGATE Sr. born c. 1622, died 1687 Hannah ELGATE Sr., born c. 1624 (a little younger), died ?? William ELGATE Jr., born 1644/45, died 1726/38 (probably closer to 1738 making him age 90+) Hannah ELGATE Jr. (married Adam Hitch), born c. 1667, died 1722/27
Hannah married Adam Hitch, son of ?? William Or John ?? Hitch and Unknown, about 1708. (Adam Hitch was born 28 Sep 1658-13 Apr 1659 1 and died 22 Jan 1731-15 Feb 1731 in Somerset Co., MD.)
