In the 1833 Tax Assessment records of Sussex County, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Little Creek Hundred as his own person with no property.

He. moved to Missouri before the birth of his first child in 1836 and probably after he sold his land in Quantico, Somerset Co., Maryland on Mar 22 1836. He had two daughters living in Joplin, MO about 1900.

On Mar 22 1836, Joseph Hitch, and wife, Elizabeth R. Hitch, sold deed for land to Archileaus Humphriss in village of Quantico for $300. (SoLR-GH8:276). This record states that Joseph Hitch is of Sussex County, Delaware.

In the Federal Census of 1840, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Shelby County, Missouri (page 21) in a household comprised of one male age 20-30, one female under age 5 and one female age 20-30.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Shelby County, Missouri (page 210) in a household as follows: - Joseph Hitch, age 39, plasterer, born in DE - Elizabeth R. Hitch, age 36, born in MD - Julia J. Hitch, age 14, born in MO - Maria E. Hitch, age 9, born in MO - James P. Hitch, age 5, born in MO - Charles L. Moore, age 24, farmer, born in DE.

In the Federal Census of 1860, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Macon County, Missouri (page 240, Macon City) in a household as follows: - Joseph Hitch, age 49, plasterer, born in DE - Elizabeth D. Hitch, age 48, born in MD - Julie (?) J.(?) Hitch (female), age 21, born in MO - Mariah Hitch, age 18, born in MO - James P.(?) Hitch, age 14, born in MO.

In the Federal Census of 1870, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Henry County, Missouri (page 249, Clinton Township) in a household as follows: - Joseph Hitch, age 60, butcher, born in MD - Elizabeth Hitch, age 58, born in MD - Julia Hitch, age 26, born in MO - Maria Hitch, age 22, born in MO.

In 1880, Joseph Hitch is age 69 in Joplin, Jasper Co., MO, the owner of a butcher shop.

Joseph married Elizabeth R. Moore on 11 Dec 1832 in Sussex Co., DE.¹ (Elizabeth R. Moore was born in 1812-1814 in MD ^{5 8 9 10} and died in 1871-1879 in MO.)
