In the 1833 Tax Assessment records of Sussex County, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Little Creek Hundred as his own person with no property.

He. moved to Missouri before the birth of his first child in 1836 and probably after he sold his land in Quantico, Somerset Co., Maryland on Mar 22 1836. He had two daughters living in Joplin, MO about 1900.

On Mar 22 1836, Joseph Hitch, and wife, Elizabeth R. Hitch, sold deed for land to Archileaus Humphriss in village of Quantico for $300. (SoLR-GH8:276). This record states that Joseph Hitch is of Sussex County, Delaware.

In the Federal Census of 1840, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Shelby County, Missouri (page 21) in a household comprised of one male age 20-30, one female under age 5 and one female age 20-30.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Joseph Hitch is indicated in Shelby County, Missouri (page 210) in a household as follows: - Joseph Hitch, age 39, plasterer, born in DE - Elizabeth R. Hitch, age 36, born in MD - Julia J. Hitch, age 14, born in MO - Maria E. Hitch, age 9, born in MO - James P. Hitch, age 5, born in MO - Charles L. Moore, age 24, farmer, born in DE.
