From "A Hitch Orchard", Daisy Hitch Davies, 1931: "In 1923 Robert John Hitch was one of the pursers on the Pennsylvania Railroad boat, the steamer "Maryland", which plied between Cape Charles and Norfolk, VA. At that date he had been on the boat five years. He was about sixteen when he first became employed by the company. He was considered capable though young, of holding responsible positions. The compiler visited him at his home in the summer of 1930. His wife was descended from an old Maryland family of which a genealogy is compiled. She was a school teacher. No issue." Robert married Gladys E. Dashiell, daughter of Andrew J. Dashiell and Laura Virginia Newton, on 16 Jun 1927 in Fruitland, Wicomico Co., MD.1 (Gladys E.
