Robert John (Jack) Hitch

From "A Hitch Orchard", Daisy Hitch Davies, 1931: "In 1923 Robert John Hitch was one of the pursers on the Pennsylvania Railroad boat, the steamer "Maryland", which plied between Cape Charles and Norfolk, VA. At that date he had been on the boat five years. He was about sixteen when he first became employed by the company. He was considered capable though young, of holding responsible positions. The compiler visited him at his home in the summer of 1930. His wife was descended from an old Maryland family of which a genealogy is compiled. She was a school teacher. No issue."

In the Federal Census of 1920, Robert J. Hitch and his brother are listed as employees on the U.S.S. Maryland in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia as follows: - H. Atwood Hitch, age 23, born in MD - Robert J. Hitch, age 18, born in MD.

Robert married Gladys E. Dashiell, daughter of Andrew J. Dashiell and Laura Virginia Newton, on 16 Jun 1927 in Fruitland, Wicomico Co., MD.¹ (Gladys E. Dashiell was born on 28 Sep 1904,^{3 5 8} died on 23 Aug 1990 in Wicomico Co., MD ^{3 9} and was buried about 26 Aug 1990 in Wicomico Memorial Park, Salisbury, Wicomico Co., MD.)
