*This line is still uncertain, but compelling. There is no doubt that Lewis Hitch comes from this line - the doubt is only with his direct parentage.

Lewis Hitch's son, Edwin is listed in 1850 as age 6 and then in 1860 as age 17 in the household of John McClain. McClain is probably the maiden name of one of Lewis' wives as one of his sons, Rufus McClain Hitch is named after it. He moved to Illinois sometime after he purchased land there in 1836 and before 1838 when his oldest son John was born.

Lewis' son, Marcus Finley Hitch stated in a letter penned in 1901, "My father moved from Delaware first to Ohio and later to Pike Co., in the western part of Illinois where I was born and raised." This suggests that he may have come from the Caroline County, Maryland/Sussex County, Delaware line that moved to Ross County, Ohio (William and Nancy [Ross?] Hitch) in the early part of the 19th century.

On September 9, 1836, we find the following information in the Illinois State Land Sales Archives for Adams County, Illinois: Purchaser: Lewis Hitch Date: September 9, 1836 Acres: 80 Price: $1.25/acre Type of Sale: Federal Sale County, Section, Township: 1, 32, 03S Meridian: 4 Arch. Vol. No., Page: 701, 015 Record ID: 244491 Section Part, Range: E2NE, 05W.

Also, on November 25, 1837, we find another entry: Purchaser: Lewis Hitch Date: November 25, 1837 Acres: 40 Price: $1.25/acre Type of Sale: Federal Sale County, Section, Township: 1, 32, 03S Meridian: 4 Arch. Vol. No., Page: 701, 015 Record ID: 244492 Section Part, Range: NWSE, 05W.
