"Herbert H. Hitch has a grocery store in Salisbury, MD. Here I made a call in the summer of 1930 and took a snapshot of him and his brother Ernest who works in the store with him. He later sent me data for his family."
Wedding announcement in the May 26, 1877 edition of the Salisbury Advertiser states, "HITCH-MILLS - On Thursday evening 24th inst. at St. Peter's P.E. Church by Rev. Dr. Fulton, Mr. Herbert Hitch to Miss Laura Mills, both of this county."
The 1880 Federal Census for Wicomico County, Maryland, shows Herbert Hitch living in District 8 (Salisbury) in a household with the following: - Herbert, age 24 7/12 - Laura, age 19 9/12 - Morris, age 2 1/12 All were born in Maryland.
On March 25, 1884, Edward P. and Susan O. Humphreys sold land to Herbert H.W. Hitch for $150. The land is described as a lot in that part of the city of Salisbury called California. Witness: Handy Fooks. (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber SPT No. 6, Folio 246)
On December 30, 1884, Herbert H.W. and Laura E. Hitch received mortgage from Allison A. Gillis for $1000 payable in one year. Collateral was a lot in that part of the city of Salisbury called California on north side of Main Street adjoining George Ellis, E.P. Humphreys and Robert Dryden. This is same property Herbert bought from E.P. Humphreys. (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber SPT No. 7, Folio 76)
On December 3, 1888, Herbert H. and Earnest B. Hitch received a deed for $1 from Frank C. and Ella I. Todd. Land is a lot in Salisbury on Main Street that borders the Cranberry Company; lot of James S. Melson; and land that Herbert Hitch purchased of Frank C. Todd on January 20, 1888. On January 1, 1890, Ernest B. Hitch sold land for $1 to Herbert Hitch. Land was in Salisbury on Main Street, the same land they bought from Frank C. and Ella I. Todd on December 3, 1888. (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber FMS NO. 7, Folio 355)
On October 14, 1890, Herbert H. and Laura E. Hitch sold land in Salisbury for $300 to John F. Waller. Land is on Main Street extended, the same that Herbert H. and Ernest Hitch purchased from Frank C. & Ella I. Todd on 12/3/1888. (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber FMS No. 6, Folio 385)
On March 21, 1892, James R.T. and Cora W. Laws sold land to Herbert H. Hitch for $400. It was a lot in Salisbury bounded by Lemon and High Streets to the property of Levin R. Doorman "now occupied by L.M. Price." (Wicomico County Land Records, Liber FMS8, Folio 370)
On March 28, 1892, Herbert H. and Laura Hitch sold land for $350 to Mrs. Virginia E. Mitchell. It was a lot in that part of Salisbury called California on Main Street extended bordering the lot of Charles H. Ratledge and the lot of John F. Waller. The Salisbury Advertiser of November 2, 1895 stated in an article that Herbert H. Hitch married Mrs Hester Coughlin "of Baltimore" on October 29, 1895.

Hitch, age 54, grocery merchant, married 14 years - Hester A. Hitch, age 44 - Samuel H. Hitch, age 24, lineman for telephone company - Margaret E. Hitch, age 10 - Mary E. Coughlin, age 25 - Lillian M. Coughlin, age 23 All were born in Maryland, can speak English and can read and write.
