Mrs. Hitch's obituary was in "The News and Observer," Raleigh, NC, Thursday, September 9, 1954:

"Mrs. J.M. Hitch. Sr.

Mrs. Llewellyn F. Hitch, widow of Dr. J.M. Hitch Sr. of Laurel, Delaware, and mother of Dr. J.M. Hitch Jr. of Raleigh, died Wednesday at Suffolk, Virginia, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Laurel Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Surviving are her son, two grandsons of Raleigh; a sister, Mrs. George Smith of Suffolk, and a number of nieces and nephews."

An obituary also appeared in the Suffolk, Virginia newspaper of September 8, 1954 as follows:

"Mrs. Llewellyn Freeney Hitch

Suffolk, Sept. 8 - Mrs. Llewellyn Freeney Hitch, 75, died today at 4 a.m., at Obici Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was the daughter of James Cannon and Clara Covington Freeney, of Maryland, and member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church Laurel, Del. She is survived by a son, Dr. Joseph M. Hitch, of Raleigh, NC; two grandsons, David Charles Hitch and John Llewellyn Hitch, of Raleigh, and a sister, Mrs. George Glazebrook Smith, of Suffolk. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3 a.m. at St. Phillips Church, Laurel. Burial will be in the church cemetery."
