The following is from "Delaware - Past and Present,": DR. JOSEPH MARTIN HITCH: The entire professional career of Dr. Joseph Martin Hitch has been devoted to the service of residents of Laurel and vicinity. Dr. Hitch is a graduate of the University of Maryland, and has been engaged in general medical and surgical practice there since 1897.

William Joseph Hitch, father of Dr. Joseph Martin Hitch, was born in Laurel, Delaware, March 19, 1835, and died March 10, 1908. After attending the local public schools, he then attended Dickinson College for a year and prepared himself to enter the University of Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated, receiving the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine. He first engaged in medical practice at Crotches Ferry. One year later he changed his place of residence and located at Phillips Hill, where he engaged in practice in association with Dr. John Martin, his father-in-law.

In 1876, he located in Laurel, Delaware, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was the son of Elijah and Leah (Armstrong) Hitch, the first-mentioned of whom was a farmer and a local preacher and well known as a man of general ability. He was a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Dwight) Hitch, and Robert Hitch was a son of Isaac and Sarah (Elligood) Hitch. William Joseph Hitch married Mary Emily Martin, daughter of Dr. John Martin, of Phillips Hill, Sussex County, Delaware. The Martin family is as old and honored one in this State. Mary Emily Martin was a descendant of Josiah Martin and of Ruth (Hopkins) Martin, the line descending through their son James, who married Mary Stevenson; their son Josiah, who married Alice Verdin; their son Dr. John, who married Ann E. Harris. Dr. John and Ann E. (Harris) Martin were the parents of Mary Emily Martin, who married William Joseph Hitch.

Dr. Joseph Martin Hitch, son of Dr. William Joseph and Mary Emily (Martin) Hitch, was born in Sussex County, Delaware, February 16, 1871. He attended the local public schools, graduating from Laurel High School with the class of 1890 and then, having chosen his father's profession, that of medicine, became a student in the University of Maryland, from which he was graduated with the class of 1897. After graduation he located in Laurel, and here he has since been successfully engaged in general medical practice. He in a member of the Sussex County Medical Society, and is well known among his professional associates as an able practitioner and a faithful family physician. His religious affiliation is with the Episcopal church.

Dr. Joseph Martin Hitch was married, June 22, 1904, to Llewellyn Freeny, daughter of James and Clara Ellen (Covington) Freeny, of Suffolk, Virginia. Dr. and Mrs. Hitch have one son, Joseph Martin, Jr., who is a student in the University of Delaware, class of 1929. The family house is located on Lindbergh Street, in Laurel."

In the Federal Census of 1920, Joseph M. Hitch is indicated as a boarder in a household in Sussex County, Delaware as follows: - Joseph M. Hitch, age 48, born in DE - Lon F. Hitch, age 38, born in MD - Joseph M. Hitch Jr., age 11, born in DE

His picture and obituary were in a Raleigh, North Carolina newspaper (unknown date - sent to me by John L. Hitch):

"Joseph Hitch is dead at 70 <picture>

Dr. Joseph Martin Hitch, a former professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, diedSaturday. He was 70. Hitch, who practiced dermatology in Raleigh for 30 years before retiring in 1973, lived at 101 Chatterson Drive. He served as a clinical professor of medicine at the UNC School of Medicine from 1952 to 1975 and was instrumental in forming the Division of Dermatology, now the Department of Dermatology.

Hitch was a former chairman of the dermatology sections of the Southern Medical Association and the Medical Society of North Carolina. He also was a former president of the Raleigh Academy of Medicirie, the Wake County Medical Society, the Southern Dermatologic Society, the Raleigh Little Theater and the Royster Club.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. Surviving: his widow, Mrs Helen G. Hitch, two sons. Dr. David C. Hitch of Oklahoma City, and John L. Hitch of Raleigh; and three grandchildren."
