Dr. John Bruce Malone, 73, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018. He was born March 31, 1945, in Takoma Park, Md., to James T. and Florence Holbrook Malone. He graduated from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, Md., and served in the Marine Corps from 1962-66. While in the Marines, he received technical training in basic electronics, fundamentals of radio, and ground radio repair. He served as a ground radio repairman with the 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, and also with the USMC Repair Depot, Albany, Ga. He attained the rank of Sargent. He was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Ga., where he received his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering in 1970, master's degree in 1971, and PhD in 1974. From 1974-1989, he worked as an aerospace engineer at Grumman Aerospace Corp in Bethpage, NY, Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta, Ga., and Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth, Texas. He retired in 2014 from NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., after 25 years of service. During his career at NASA, he served as Head - Unsteady Aerodynamics Branch from 1989-91; Chief - Structural Mechanics from 1991-93; and Deputy Director, Research and Technology Group from 1993-98. From 1998-2000, he served as the first Director of the Intelligent Synthesis Environment Office at NASA Langley Research Center, and from October 2006 until his retirement, he served as Deputy Director, Safety & Mission Assurance Office. He loved music and was a longtime violinist with the York River Symphony Orchestra. His hobbies also included reading, playing the piano, and building model ships. Preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Malone, he is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Linda Carden Malone; his daughter, Mandy Malone; his son, James Malone; a sister-in-law, Sandra Malone; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at Amory Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Inurnment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, Va.
