Arthur Hitch Jr., 85, of the Edgewater section of Norfolk, died May 3, 2002, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Hitch was born on Raleigh Avenue in Norfolk, and had been a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Arthur and Virginia Etheridge Hitch and was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Hitch Brock and his brother, James E. Hitch. He was a life member of Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Norfolk. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II in the Asian Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. He was an avid duck and quail hunter, fisherman and sailor.

Mr. Hitch attended Episcopal High School and graduated from Maury High School and attended the University of Virginia. He was the former president of the HiY Club at Maury High School. He played baseball throughout high school and college and was captain of the baseball team at Episcopal High School. While in the University of Virginia, he was on the baseball team that won the Southeast Conference and was invited to play on the centennial anniversary at Abner Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Following his military career, he came back to Norfolk to work in the family business of Hitch Gravel Corporation who supplied road building material for the secondary roads of North Carolina and Virginia. Concurrently he owned Hitch Terminal Corporation, a liquid storage facility, supplying products to farms throughout the southeast.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Barbara Vail Hitch; two sons, Arthur Hitch III of Virginia Beach and Frank Hamilton Hitch of Norfolk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church by the Rev. James W.H. Sell. Burial will be private.

He will be remembered with great affection by his friends and family throughout Virginia and North Carolina.

Memorial donations may be made to A. Heath Light Fund of Christ and St. Lukes Episcopal Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
