Private, Co A, 49th Ohio. Enlisted at age 20, captured 31 Dec 1862 at the Battle of Stones River, Tenn; exchanged and returned to Company 1 September 1863; wounded 20 Sep 1863 in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia (gun shot wound to right shoulder and left hip); discharged 27 Jul 1864 on surgeons certificate of discharge.(Index to Civil War Roster, Vol 4, p. 494)
He married Harriet E. Scott 31 August 1865 in Tiffin, Seneca, Ohio. They were divorced in Dec 1875, and he married second Prudence Stokes 24 April 1878 in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas.
Prudence and James went to California about 1883. He shows up in a California Voter Registration in San Diego County in 1884 and 1886 but must have returned to Ohio, without Prudence, prior to 1900. He was admitted to the military home in Dayton, Ohio in December of 1900 and discharged himself in July of 1901 and returned to Arkansas.
