Nancy Katherine (Nannie) Montgomery

The following information comes from "A Hitch Orchard": "Nancy Katherine Montgomery Hitch was the daughter of Robert and Martha Perkins Montgomery. This lady (Aunt Nan) is a most remarkable person and entitled to special mention. She has always been a strong vigorous person and in spite of having a large family of her own, has kept abreast of the times by taking a keen interest in the affairs of the works. As a young woman she received a good education and taught school in Gibson County for several years.

After her marriage she became one of the most dependable members of the family of HITCH. Always the very best of help in any sickness or emergency. I think she attended my mother at the birth of every one of us children. As children we learned to love her dearly and she always remained a pillar of strength to us.

She has always retained an interest in educational matters and during the World War I, when there was a shortage of teachers in Evansville, (remember she was 61 and had raised a large family) she renewed her teachers license and taught in the city schools until after the close of the war. She was elected a member of the school board which office she held for many years. She relinquished this office on January 1, 1931.

Aunt Nan is a power in southern Indiana politics and even now at 74 (1930) rules women's branch of the Republican Party with a strong hand. Since girlhood she has taken an active interest in the W.C.T.U. work and her interest in this work has never lagged. In connection with this and other work she has travelled extensively in the U.S.A and still derives a great deal pleasure from her travels.

Since the war (World War I), she has taken an active interest in the American War Mother's Association and at their National Convention in Kansas City in the fall of 1930 was elected to serve as a National Director. Shortly after the other officers were lined up in the hotel lobby for a picture when Aunt Nan stepped backward and fell down a flight of stairs breaking several bones and injuring her seriously. We despaired of saving her for a while but she has now recovered and apparently none the worse for it.

Aunt Nan is a good conversationalist as well as an interesting public speaker. Her children and grandchildren worship her as do all the others who have had the privilege of knowing her well."

Nancy married James Macklin Hitch, son of Zachariah (Zack) Hitch and Mary Adeline Spain, on 07 Jan 1881 in Gibson Co., IN.¹ (James Macklin Hitch was born on 21 Oct 1855 in Princeton, Gibson Co., IN ^{2 6 7 8 9 10 11} and died on 28 Feb 1944 in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN ^{5 12}.)
