On Mar 25 1801, a land transaction between Henry Ward Pearce and wife Rachel of Cecil Co., MD and Matthew Pearce Esq. and Maria his wife formerly of New Castle Co., DE but now of the City of Philadelphia, merchant and son of said Henry Ward Pearce, parties of one part and Clayton of the Town of Manship and Barsillai Newbold of the Town of Chesterfield, both of Burlington County, NJ and John Newbold of Philadelphia. It was land that an "ancestor" of Henry Ward Pearce had patented on Nov 5 1675 when the area was part of the lower counties on the Delaware, New York (NY Book of Patents, No. 4, page 42) and is now part of Red Lion Hundred, New Castle Co., DE. Henry Ward Pearce had conveyed part of this property to his son Matthew. It borders Dragon Creek and St. Georges Creek and passes by the "St. Georges new canal" and ends bordering the Delaware River. All told, it includes 832 acres of land andwas sold for "seven thousand eight hundred and twenty pounds good current gold and silver coin". Matthew Pearce reserved right to 30 cords of hickory and 200 white oak posts and a quantity of oak plank on the land. (SxLR-O:270) Matthew married Mary Read, daughter of George Read and Unknown, in 1787 in New Castle Co., DE. (Mary Read was born in Sep 1770 in New Castle Co., DE and died on 12 Jan 1816 in New Castle Co., DE.) |
