He was a blacksmith. His death certificate says he was a blacksmith and died on Mar 1 1906 of brights disease only 3 days before his brother, Lemuel Hitch. He had moved to Wilmington, DE by 1868 when he is listed in the city directory.

The 1860 census list Daniel Hitch in household 043 on page 613 in Sussex Co., DE as age 13 and born in DE. Other members of the household were Nathan V. Messick, age 37, farmer, born DE and Margaret J. Messick, age 40, born DE

On Nov 11 1862, Daniel Hitch joined as a Private in Co. I (Capt. Heydricks Co.), 6th Regiment, Delaware Infantry Volunteers, USA. He was listed as age 18 and mustered in at Bridgeville, DE on Nov 11 1862 for 9 months; however, he was probably a bit younger given other records. He mustered out in Smyrna, DE on Sep 5 1863 and was still indicated as age 18.

By 1870, Daniel Hitch is listed with his family in New Castle Co., DE in Wilmington (page 265) as Daniel Hitch, age 24, brakeman, born in DE; Sallie Hitch, age 21, born in DE and Mary E. Hitch, age 2/12, born in DE.

In 1880, Daniel Hitch is back in Sussex Co. as Dannie Hitch, age 33, b. DE; Louisa Hitch, age 32, b. DE; Maggie Hitch, age 8/12, b. DE and Sarah Knox.
