John Gillis, son of Thomas and Mary (Manlove) Gillis, b. Northampton Co., VA. c 1662; d. Som. Co. by 15 Aug. 1720. In his will, signed 20 Apr. 1720, he bequeathed to his son John 300 acres on Barren Creek called "Maiden's Lott" where he now lives; to sons Thomas and Ezekiel each 200 acres, "Rich Ridges" at head of Quantico [Creek] and also 100 acres called "Gillises Addition", to be divided by them as they wish; to son Joseph, a minor, 550 acres in three tracts. He also made bequests to daughters Rebecca, Sarah, Betty, Bridget; son Joseph was to be in the care of son Ezekiel for two years, and daughter Bridget in the care of daughter Sarah until 16. Executors were to be wife Mary and son Thomas. Witnesses were Isaac Knott, William Roberts, Robert King (Som. Wills EB9:70). In the distribution of the estate 29 June 1723, the heirs were Thomas (executor), Ezekiel, Joseph, and John Gillis (sons of the deceased), widow Mary Gillis, and sons-in-law Thomas Humphreys, William Hitch, Abraham Taylor and Solomon Wright; the widow received shares for her three youngest children, Joseph, Betty, and Bridget Gillis.
