"Whitinton" Hitch is one of nine Hitch households mentioned in the Federal Census of 1790. He is living in Northwest Fork Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware at the time. On Nov 20 1797, Whittington Hitch, "yeoman of Sussex County" received a deed from Mary Hatfield for £16.10.0 for 150 acres of land in Northwest Fork Hundred including the "plantation Whittington Hitch now lives … near the village of Bridge Branch." Tracts included were "Bite the Biter" and "Rosses Venture". Mary Hatfield was described as the daughter of Elijah Hatfield who died intestate and the lands went to her as heir. (SxLR-W21:296)

In the Sussex County Guardian Accounts, there is a listing for Nov 21 1797 for "the account of Whittington Hitch and Delilah his wife, late Delilah Hatfield, guardian to the estate of Amelia Hatfield, a minor daughter of Elisha Hatfield late of Sussex County, deceased." Two similar listings were given for Letitia Hatfield and Zachariah Hatfield, son and daughter (respectively) of Elisha Hatfield. (SxGA)

In the Federal Census of 1800, Whittington Hitch is indicated on page 350 in Sussex County, Delaware with a household including one male age 45+, two females under age 10, one female age 16-26, two females age 45+ and three slaves.

In the 1801 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, "Whittenton" Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 3 horses 3 cows and calves 5 cows 3 yearlings 2 sheep 2 sows and shoats (SxTA-1801)

On Jul 15 1803, Thomas Sorden received a deed from Gillis Hitch and Lisha his wife for 19 acres of land in Northwest Fork Hundred. The record states that Gillis got "Heirship" from his father William, his mother Mary and his brother William, all deceased, by virtue of a Deed of Bargain from Spencer Hitch and wife Sophia, Unice Jessop widow of John Jessop, Whittington Hitch and wife Delilah, and Sally Hitch - all heirs as described of the same William, Mary and William Hitch. The land was part of tract "Hale's Choice (or Chance)" situated at the village of Bridge Branch "where Doc James Ralston and John Wilson now live". (SxLR-Y23:302,309)

In the 1803 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, Whittington Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 170 acres of land 2 horses 1 small colt 7 cows and 3 yearlings 10 sheep 2 sows and shoats (SxTA-1803)

In the 1807 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, "Whitenton" Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: capitulation 3 horses 1 yoke of oxen 3 cows and calves 3 young cattle 10 sheep 3 sows (SxTA-1807)

In 1808, Whittington Hitch entered into a tenant contract with David Richards where the tenant, Whittington Hitch, agreed "to pay and deliver" to his landlord, David Richards "the full quantity of fifty bushels of good merchantable wheat (except the first year only forty-five bushels of wheat are to be paid) and two hundred bushels of good merchantable Indian corn." In the 1809 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, Whitty Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 45 acres of land 3 horses 1 yoke of oxen 10 cattle 4 sows and pigs (SxTA-1809)

In the 1810 Federal Census, Whitty Hitch is indicated on page 352 in Northwest Fork Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware in a household comprised of two males age 16-26, one male over age 45, two females age 16-26 and one female over age 45.

In the 1813 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, Whittington Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 4 work horses 1 colt 1 yoke of steers 2 sows and shoats 2 oz plate (SxTA-1813)

In the 1816 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, Whittington Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 50 acres of land near Bridgeville 2 horses 1 colt 4 cows 1 yoke of oxen 11 sheep 1 sow and 13 shoats (SxTA-1816)

In the Federal Census of 1820, Whittington Hitch is indicated in Northwest Fork Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware (page 256) in a household comprised of one male under age 10, one male age 10-16, one male age 16-18, one male age 16-26, one male over age 45 and one female over age 45.

In the 1822 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, Whittington Hitch is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred with: 50 acres of land 3 horses 3 cows and calves 5 young cattle 2 sows and 12 pigs 15 sheep 16 shoats (SxTA-1822)

Whittington Hitch is listed in the Sussex County tax records of 1822 but not for 1824 (when Whittington Hitch Jr. is listed), nor is he listed in the Federal Census of 1830.
