Thomas was a Burgess of Somerset County from 1712 to 1723.

Thomas Purnell Sr., wrote his will Feb 27 1721 and it was proven in Somerset Co. Apr 2 1723:
To 3 sons Thomas, Mathew and Benjamin and their heirs, 130 acres "Fearne Hill," 800 acres "Fairefield," 400 acres "New Fairfield," 360 acres "Chance" and 70 acres of "Spalding," bought of Jas. Lelley (for div. see will). To other 3 sons John, Elisha and Walton, and their heirs, 1186 acres in Copoinco Neck bought of Capt. Edward Hammond; 200 acres "Adams full Quantity." To John Deverix and heirs, 314 acres "Rochester," in Broadneck where Thos Scott lived, said Deverix to pay Extrs for same. To daughters Eliza. and Anne, £30 for purchase of servt. when daughter Anne arrives at age of 16. To wife Katherine, residue of real estate and 1/5 of personalty. To Eliza., wife of son John, personalty. To children Thos., Mathew, Elisha, Walton, Benjamin, Eliza. and Anne, residue of estate equally; said sons to be of age at 18. Wife to have care of Walton and Anne until of age; son Thos. to have care of Eliza. and Benjamin until of age; son John to have care of son Elisha until of age. Should wife refuse to abide by above will to have 1/3 of personal estate absolutely and use of 1/2 of dwelling plantation during her life. Extr: Son Thomas. Overseers: Bro. John and son Mathew. Thomas next married Katherine Gooden about 1715 in Somerset Co., MD. (Katherine Gooden was born about 1690 in Somerset Co., MD and died before 17 Aug 1753 in Worcester Co., MD.)
