He bought land in 1765 at tract A54, Slutkill Neck, Accomack Co, VA. Henry and Elizabeth Scarburgh sold 125 acres of this tract to Ruben Joyne; it was west of the Bennett & George Scarburgh part and between the two branches of Renny's (now Underhill's) Cut or Creek. In 1789 Reuben Joynes (wife Margaret) left to his son William, who retained possession until well into the next century. (NOTE: Lucy Ames Edwards describes this land as on Warehouse Branch of Pungoteague Creek.)
Lt. Reuben Joynes was named in the settlement of his father's estate on 11 September 1770 at Northampton Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of Major Joyne was granted to Reuben Joyne. Appraisers: Arthur Robins, William Green, Luke Heath & Thomas Addison.
He was named in the settlement of his uncle's estate on 9 February 1773 at Northampton Co, VA. The estate of Littleton Joyne dec'd to Major Joyne, administrator of Lyttleton Joyne. List of debts & credits showing a balance due the estate to be divided between his children William & Sarah of £5:11:7. Pursent to an order of the Court dated 8 Dec 1772 we the subscribers hath audited the said estate according to the accounts laid before us 8 Feb 1773, signed Arthur Robins & Zerobabel Downing. At a Court held at Northampton County 9 Feb 1773 this settlement of the estate of Littleton Joyne dec'd was exhibited & sworn to by Reuben Joyne, administrator of Major Joyne dec'd, who was administrator of the said Lyttleton and was ordered to be recorded.
Reuben served in the Revolutionary War in in 1776 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as Reuben Joynes (VA): 2nd Lieutenant 9th Virginia, 10 Feb 1776; 1st Lieutenant _____; resigned 27 Mar 1777. On 26 Aug 1777 Reuben Joynes was recommended for 2nd Lieutenant in the Acc Co Militia. On 27 May 1778 Reuben Joynes qualified as Lieutenant of the Acc Co militia. On 28 Oct 1807 William Joynes was named as a representative of Reuben Joynes, dec'd, a Lieutenant in the Rev. War.
He made a will on 3 November 1785 at Accomack Co, VA. In his will Reuben Joynes gave to son William Joynes my lands. Daughter Sarah Joynes. Daughter Tabitha Joynes. Daughter Elizabeth Joynes. Son Elias Dunton Joynes. To each of my sons £50 - to be applied to their education. Wife to have the use of whole estate during her widowhood. Children residual legatees. Wife Margaret & friend Levin Joynes Exrs. Witt: Theophilus Nugent.
Reuben died before 30 June 1789. It was on this date that his will was proved. Proved by John Cropper, the witness Theophilus Nugent being beyond seas. The Exrs. named in the foregoing will refusing to act Thomas Underhill qualified.
