Sylvanus Jordan Tilghman was a farmer on lands he owned in Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset Counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore. His last residence was in/near the town of Pittsville, Wicomico County, MD. Sylvanus was first married to Sarah Catherine Mills in 1870. His 2nd wife, Rosa C. Lynch whom he married in 1880, remained in their home until passing in June 1941.
His obituary read as follows:
"Salisbury, Md., Jan. 24. - Funeral services were held from his home, near Parsonsburg, for Sylvannus J. Tilghman, one of the most prosperous farmers in east Wicomico county. Mr. Tilghman, had resided on the farm where he died for over a half century. He was eighty years old and up to the time of suffering a slight stroke last summer, remarkably active. Besides his widow he is survived by three sons; Magruder L. and Paul, this county; Dr. S. J. Tilghman, Bridgeville, Del., and two daughters, Mrs. J. U. Adkins, near Salisbury, and Mrs. O'Neill, Parsonsburg."
