His name was noted as John Dockery Thompson, VI (the VI is not included in the Find A Grave as a suffix). He married Emma McCaulley daughter of Robert and Ann.

John joined the 3rd Heavy Artillery of the Pennsylvania Volunteers at the age of 14 during the Civil War. In April 1864 he transferred to the 188th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry where he served for the duration of the War. After the war he moved to Wilmington, DE in 1868 and operated the Delaware Avenue Market and a confectionary business. In 1885 they moved to Philadelphia's Germantown section and he began a contracting business. He was noted as very patient, one of nature's gentlemen, and loved by all who knew him.
