From the 1830 census records, this James Shiles heads a household as 2120010000000-010010000000 in Broad Creek Hundred, Sussex Co., DE suggesting he was age 30-40 at the time and, placing his birth year at 1794/99. Assuming he is a son of the Jesse Shiles born 1760/65, we can narrow this range to 1796/99 as he would have been age 10-14 in 1810. Finally, since we know James married Polly Quillen in 1814, we could further refine his birth year to the earlier portion of that range to probably 1796, making him 18 years of age at the time he marries in 1814.
From the 1830 census, we see that this James Shiles has 5 male children in the household as 2 under age 5, 1 age 5-10 and 2 age 10-15. If he has a son James Shiles, he would have been born sometime between 1815 and 1830. This fits with the conjecture that James Shiles who moved to Wabash Co., IN in the 1860s who was born 1810/18 and, in fact would narrow that birth year to 1815/18.
