On September 2, 1858, David Hitch received $69.80 4/5 from his father's estate (Kent Co., Delaware Probate Records).
David W. Hitch served in the Civil War. He enrolled on Aug 18 1862 in Wilmington, Delaware where he signed up with Captain Valentine to serve for 3 years. Records indicate that he was age 18, blue eyes, fair complexion, light hair, 5'-8 3/4" tall, a farmer born in Sussex Co., DE. He was a Private in Company K, 4th Regiment, Delaware Infantry Volunteers. He became Corporal while in service. Muster rolls detail his service as follws: - Oct 1862 to Jun 1864: Present - Jul/Aug 1864: Absent, Ward 24 Carver Hospital in Washington DC, wounded in action on Aug 19 1864 at Weldon RR - Sep/Oct 1864: transferred from DC to Tildon Hospital, Wilmington, DE on Oct 10 1864 - Nov 1864 to Jul 1865: Absent in Tildon Hospital in Wilmington - Jul 1865: Certificate of Disability due to gunshot wound to right leg with commuted compound fracture of the tibia. Useability one-half.
