From "A Hitch Orchard" by Daisy Hitch Davies, 1931: "Obed Freeman Hitch, grandfather of the compiler, was a very fine man given to charity and what pertains to peace. As a young man he was a sailmaker. After that business gave out he became one of the Union Store Grocery firm on Main Street Fairhaven, MA until he retired and moved to Falmouth, MA where he died. He was named for his mother's stepfather, Obed Freeman. He had no children by the second marriage. The Delano Genealogy failed to record the first marriage. The compiler has sent written corrections to two or three libraries having the book. Obed Freeman Hitch and his two wives are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Fairhaven, MA, Lot 46, Section 12. There are five generations buried in that lot, my baby brother making the fifth. One from his hometown describes him thus; "..was a Deacon of the Congregational Church for many years. He was a most faithful and devoted Christian. He was always gentle and quiet."

In the Massachusetts State Census of 1855, Obed F. Hitch is listed in household 161 in the South District of Fairhaven as follows: - Obed F. Hitch, sailmaker, age 33, born in MA - Mary G. Hitch, age 29, born in MA - William G. Hitch, age 6, born in MA.
In the Massachusetts State Census of 1865, Obed Hitch is listed in household 385 in Fairhaven as follows: - Obed Hitch, sailmaker, age 43, born in MA - Susan Hitch, age 33, born in MA - William Hitch, age 16, born in MA.
